If you have made a decision to apply epoxy floor paint to be used on your concrete floors, then there are some things that you are expected to do before the actual painting. Some people do not spend their time on the front end of the project doing these tasks despite their importance, so these unlucky homeowners fail to achieve the look that they are hoping for. If you are expecting to get a great looking floor, and to get the needed protection against moisture that can seep into the formed cracks, then here are some things that you have to do before you begin painting your flooring.
4 Angle Grinder
The first thing that you will need to do is to check the floor that you are about to paint for a sealer. You will not want to waste your money and effort painting a floor with a sealer on its surface because the paint will just not stick. It is much better if you do a simple test to know if there is sealant existing on the surface. All you need is a little amount of water sprayed out on the floor. If water beads are formed, then a sealant is covering the floor. You will need to remove all the sealant before applying the paint if you want it to stick. The best way to do this is with an angle grinder or a shot blaster. Be aware: This will cause concrete dust which can be harmful so be sure to wear a face mask.
If you don't have a sealer then the next step is to degrease the floor. If there is any oil or other contaminants staining the floor then they will need to be removed or the chemical bond between the epoxy and the upper surface of the concrete floor will not be adequate.
Another thing that you will have to do before the actual application of the epoxy floor paint that you will be using is to see that the floor is absolutely dry. Once you wash the floor and degrease it you are better off to let it set for overnight with a space heater running so that it will accept the epoxy like it is supposed to.
Make sure that you follow these tips so that you are well guided in doing everything you need to do in order to get the best results. As you are painting the concrete flooring keep in mind that you want an outcome that will look great and be protected from absorbing too much moisture.
