Tools: The tools that your will require for doing this job are

You and your time of about 2 hours or less

A bastard file of about 12" long

A small crow bar to prevent movement of rotor of lawn mower.

A worktable will be useful for dong the job comfortably.

Procedure: You can use the following procedure as a general guide and make changes to it to suit you. Remember the procedure is not sacrosanct. The results are important, not the procedure.

If possible, remove the handle of lawn mower and place lawn mower on the table.

Secure it if possible in the clamps. If you do not have clamps, do not bother, secure it against any block, so that the movement away from you is restricted.

Fix the crowbar in the blades so that it will not rotate

With the help of the bastard file, file the edges of blades so that they look sharp. Work at an angle of 45 degrees

When one blade is sharpened, remove the crowbar and turn the rotor to work on another blade. Repeat the procedure until all blades are sharpened.

If you have a flexible shaft grinder in your DIY workshop, you will be able to complete the work within 5 to 10 minutes per blade. Make a template of blade profile before you start your work and compare frequently. This is necessary to ensure that you do not over cut at a place.

While sharpening the blades ensure that the stroke is not too long otherwise, you may injure yourself.

Sharpening Blades Of Power Mower

Depending upon the lawn mower the procedure may vary. We have included general statements in this procedure; you would have to change the procedure slightly. Keep the maintenance manual of lawn mower handy if you have one.

Tools required.

Siphon hose and clean container

Heavy work gloves and goggles

Double-cut (medium-rough) flat file

Lumber scrap

Socket wrench set

Rubber mallet*

Bench vise or C clamps

Rotary blade sharpener accessory

Electric drill*

Screwdriver, or 1/4-in. rod or bolt*

Blade balancer

Replacement blade*

* Only if required

The list may look formidable, but tools are generally available with every DIY enthusiast.

Procedure:

The procedure is given for the simple single blade lawn mower, but the same will apply to all types of blades, whether single or double

Wear hand gloves and clean the engine and the gasoline tank from outside

Remove spark plug from the engine

Remove all the fuel from the tank of the gasoline engine. Use the siphon hose so you do not spill gasoline on floor.

Completely empty out the oil from gearbox if you have one

Invert the engine and have access to the blade.

Clamp the engine so it does not move and clean the blade area thoroughly

With help of a box spanner, remove the nut holding the blade. Usually the nut will be unlocked in the reverse to direction of rotation of engine. You may engage the screwdriver in the cooling fan of engine to stop rotation of engine.

If you find that you are using too much force to unlock the nut, put one or two drops of rust removing chemical, and try after 30 minutes

After you remove the blade, clamp it in the bench vise and sharpen it with a file or a grinder. Sharpen only the outer 2 to 3 inches. The area to be sharpened will be known if you see the blade.

Sharpen only to the required extent. Too much sharpening is not necessary. This is not the knife. It works at the speed of the engine

After sharpening, check with your thumb. Be careful not to cut thumb. If you have done sharpening before, or seen some one doing it, you will know what we mean by this.

Balance the blade with help of a small balancing tool on VEE blocks, or even on two foot rulers placed side by side

Refit the blades, refill engine oil and gasoline and test the sharpness of blades on uncut portion of your lawn

Safety tips:

Always use safety goggles and hand gloves when working with power tools.

Be sure to remove the spark plug before starting. Serious accidents can happen if you do not do this.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide to sharpening your lawn mower blade. Always consult the owners manual that came with your mower prior to removing the blade

1. Assemble the equipment you will need:

Safety goggles Ear plugs, if using a grinding machine Wrench to remove the blade Steel brush Metal file, bench grinder, or your choice of a sharpening tool Blade balancer

2. Disconnect the spark plug (as required for electric mowers) and tilt the mower on its side.

3. Prevent the blade from moving by wedging a block between the blade and the mower deck.

4. Use the wrench to remove the bolt at the center of the blade then carefully remove the blade to avoid hurting yourself.

5. Using the steel brush remove the rust and debris from the blade. Inspect the blade and determine if it needs replacing.

6. Using the file or grinder of your choice sharpen the blade along the original angle of each cutting edge.

Maintain the original angle. File in one direction only - toward the edge. Take equal amounts of steel off each edge.

7. Check the balance of the blade horizontally one way and, then, flip it over and check again.

If the blade does not balance, file on the heavy end. In balancing the blade, avoid filing on the newly sharpened cutting edge.

8. Reinstall the newly sharpened and balanced blade. Be sure to install the blade correctly by making sure the lift wing on each end points toward the deck of the lawn mower.

Fruit and flower have always been a classic subject for the still life, but don't just stop there. Never get the notion that you must follow those rules to create something of beauty. If you're stuck in a rut, I've got 6 ideas here that can get your wagon out of the ditch and back on the trail!

Try painting something old but unique, dig out that old coffee grinder your grandmamma passed down to you years ago. Or maybe the foot driven sowing machine. Maybe you found an old hammer and wood chisel set at an estate sale. Am I getting your creative juices going yet? One of my greatest pleasures is going Yard Sale hunting. My wife and I have a great day of it, and sometimes come away with such wonderful props! 2. Color:

Try doing a work in a monochromatic or analogous color scheme. Even a simple black and white painting will strengthen your technique in depicting value and subtleties of the half tones. It forces you to see the small differences in shade and tones throughout your still life art.

3. Texture:

No matter the medium you work in, the impact of texture always brings the viewer in closer to see how it was done. Include this with impasto passages within you work, especially around your focal object, and very much so in the highlights of that object.

4. Shadows:

Deep cast shadows across the piece will lend itself to some fairly abstract shapes. These are always interesting to view and will pull your viewer in to see what can be seen within them.

5. Viewing Point:

Altering your point of view from the front to above, below or showing only a piece of the entire setup can make for an exciting development. Ariel views are always interesting for it is an angle that is so different. Below normal eye level also makes for some wonderful ideas.

6. Scale:

Vary the size of your work. If your used to doing 8" X 10", or 14" x 16", bust loose and try a 30" X 40" or 36" X 48". You might surprise yourself in working up to a larger scale and breaking through outside your comfort zone!

Keeping your woodworking tools sharp is a necessary step, as it is difficult to enjoy working with wood when you're using dull tools. In fact, using dull hand planes can waste time and materials, not to mention being frustrating to work with. Though it's a time consuming activity, sharpening hand plane blades must be done no matter how often you use the tools in your workshop. Regardless of the method you choose for sharpening your tools, always remember that it will be a lot easier to sharpen your tools when you keep them sharp, rather than waiting years between sharpening your favorite planes.

In part, the necessary sharpness depends on the type of plane and its use. For example, a general woodworking blade may only require 400 grit, while cabinetmakers' blades and other hand planes designed for very fine work need to be honed with at least 600 grit so that they are as smooth and sharp as possible.

Although it is possible to send your planes out for sharpening, if you're like most hobbyists, you can't afford to do this. Luckily, it is relatively easy to learn how to sharpen them yourself. Like most projects involving woodworking, it's important to have the right tools before you start. To sharpen hand tools such as planes, you can use nearly any knife sharpening method, such as a wet stone or dry stone, or an electric sharpener or grinder. Some plan designs will require a crock stick or a sharpening rod.

To sharpen the blade of a hand plane, the first step is to remove the blade from the plane. The next step is to examine the blade. Is it perfectly straight, or curved? If the blade is meant to be slightly curved, you'll need to make sure to maintain this shape during the sharpening process. Are there any large nicks or breaks that may not be removable using typical sharpeners?

Most hand planes have a specific angle, which may be disclosed by the manufacturer. For example, many Stanley smoothing planes have a 25 degree angle. As much as possible, you'll want to avoid changing the angle of the blade by using an angle guide. Now, sharpen the blade as you would a knife. Depending on its design, you may need a very thin sharpening rod to fit between the blade and the surrounding metal edges. This steel rod will gently remove layers of metal until the blade is sharpened.

Other planes can be sharpened with nearly any knife sharpening system, since the cutting edge is exposed. Place the blade on your work surface, beveled-side up, or hold the blade against a sharpening wheel with this side facing the wheel. Always make sure that the cutting edge stays level with the sharpener, or you will end up taking too much metal off one side of the blade, making it uneven.

Once you think that you are done sharpening, test the plane out on a piece of scrap wood. If it creates visible lines or does not glide across the wood easily, it needs more sharpening. You can also visibly inspect the blade for burrs or nicks, which mean that the blade has not been sharpened to perfection.

Your lawnmower will only ever be as good as its blades, and as they get worked pretty hard it is worth looking after them to ensure years of good service. There are a few things to consider in order to do this properly and in a safe way.

How Blades are Made

Blades tend to be made of either tool steel or carbon steel. Tool steel blades can be expensive and more difficult to look after as you cannot sharpen then yourself. On the other end they do tend to remain sharp for much longer. Carbon steel blades are easier to care for and can be sharpened with a few simple tools. It is quite crucial to have sharp blades for mowing as blunt blades would affect the way your lawn looks and grows.

How To Sharpen Your Lawnmower Blades

Sharpening your lawnmower blades is a fairly straightforward job that you can take care off easily and quickly. You can follow the simple steps below to do so, regardless of the make or model you own: just double check the right procedure to remove the blade that is detailed in your owner's manual.

1. Take out the power source to avoid serious injury or even death, in case the mower could start accidentally. If your mower is electric make sure it is unplugged, and remove the spark plug if it is gas-powered engine.

2. Use spanners to carefully remove the blades: ensure that you are in a position that limits the risk of the spanner slipping, which could result in a nasty cut.

3. Number the blades as you remove them to ensure that you put them back in the correct position when you're done. If there are balancing weights directly attached to the blades do not disassemble. By leaving the weights on the blades you are making your life a lot easier and saving time when it comes to putting it all back together.

4. Work on each blade individually, holding it firmly in place by using a vice.

5. Take either a grinder or file along the outline of the blade to sharpen it. Be really careful when checking that the sharpening is done to your satisfaction as this could be unpleasant on the fingers! Handle the sharp blades with caution.

6. Put the sharpened blades back in place, along with the balancing weights if you did remove them.

7. It is possible to sharpen the blades in situ, without removing them from the mower at all: you will need an angle grinder with a flexible shaft in order to do so. This could be a much quicker option if you have access to this tool.

8. Once you're done you should check that the blades are properly balanced using a blade balancer to avoid any unnecessary vibrations when mowing the lawn.

Underground Irrigation Repair Without Digging - All it Takes is a Heat Gun!

I developed this irrigation repair technique out of desperation. A sprinkler head had launched itself out of the ground right beside me one day and landed in a potted plant. The resulting geyser was spectacular, but the location was horrible!

The area around this particular sprinkler head was surrounded in paving stone and brick, and worse, right up against a fence. To make things harder, I had installed a french-drain only a foot away! The riser's nipple was missing. Sure enough, a replacement stand-pipe wouldn't even begin to screw in! Obviously, the broken off part of the nipple was stuck in the t-connector - deep underground! Before I developed this technique, I would have had to dig lateral trenches about 2' long on each side of the connector, cut the supply lines off each end of the connector, added a sleeve and spacer, then glued in a replacement t-connector. Not this time! There was too much involved in digging this connector out of the ground!

I have a special purpose tool I'd bought from The Home Depot just for this problem. It's the PVC variant of an "easy-out." Unfortunately, it wouldn't work! I couldn't get enough pressure (the connector was buried just about the extractor's full length), and I kept scraping my knuckles against a fence post. The stand-pipe wasn't PVC, it was vinyl. It was so slick, the knife edges of the extractor wouldn't bite into the inside edge.

But vinyl melts! I have a 1200 watt heat gun I'd bought for paint stripping. The extractor's tip is metal and by using this heat gun, I got the extractor's tip hot. Real hot. Sizzling hot! By pushing the extractor straight down the hole, it gently melted into the broken off nipple - deep underground! I let it set and cool for a few minuets before giving it a twist. Two seconds later, the broken off nipple was extracted!

After screwing in a replacement riser, I cycled the irrigation pump to that zone to rinse out all of the dirt that had fallen into the connector. I put a new sprinkler head on the replacement riser, and guess what? That irrigation repair was done. Not only done, I didn't have to dig one spade of dirt!

The trick was heating up the extractor's tip hot enough to melt into the broken off vinyl nipple to get a grip.

A few weeks later, I had a different problem. I had mounted new window boxes along one side wall of my home and wanted to use my in-ground irrigation system to water the new flowers. I had a capped off riser right where I need to place a 4' riser. Unfortunately, this was an old steel riser that I'd bumped into several times with the mower, and when I removed the pipe it left the t-connector's threads stripped and choked with rust-scale! Unlike most of my irrigation repair projects, this line is very shallow. Shallow enough for me to scrape away the top to really see the damage.

There wasn't anything I could do to thread the new riser into place, I was going to have to replace the t-connector - or maybe not. I have a pretty complete shop and I have metal working tools to tap holes for screw threads, or cut outside threads for bolts. Since I had to go to The Home Depot or Lowe's anyway for a replacement t-connector, why not see if they had a tool for pipe threads?

The staff at Lowe's laughed when I asked them for a tool to cut internal 1/2" pipe thread for an underground PVC t-connector! Their only advice was to dig it up and replace it. No Way! The staff at The Home Depot didn't laugh out loud, but they also suggested replacement fittings.

I did buy the fittings, but I also found the perfect tool - an 18" length of 1/2" steel pipe! Once again, the 1200 watt heat gun came to the rescue. By heating the pipe end, the thread section, I was able to plunge it into the buried t-connector. It sizzled as it sank in and I quickly worked it in deeper as I screwed it into place. Without letting it sit, I unscrewed the steel pipe to prevent it from welding into place. I repeated this operation several times until all of the pipe's threaded section was within the t-connector's nipple.

Guess what? The new replacement 4' PVC riser threaded itself right in! By using heat, pressure, and steel threads, I was able to partially melt the underground t-connector and cut new threads. Not a spade full of dirt was dug up for this irrigation repair!

Since then, I've helped neighbors with their irrigation repair projects that left them amazed - "you can actually cut new threads underground without having to dig" - Wow, thanks Bill, real big thanks!

Not all irrigation repairs can use this technique. Let's face it, if the t-connector's nipple or connecting pipes crack or break, you will have to dig. But try this tip first and see if it works. You'll know within minuets if there's a more serious problem. You'll get wet standing there, but you'll quickly see upwelling around the sprinkler head in operation if there's a broken pipe or cracked nipple. Oh well, at least you gave it a try!

I've had this cheap heat gun for more than twenty years. Not only does it do a great job lifting paint, I've used it for boat electrical repairs (heat-shrink tubing), removing self-adhesive vinyl tile, contact paper, and sanding disks, and even starting fires in my charcoal pit. This is NOT a hair dryer - keep safe, keep it away from you at all times!

In conclusion, I was able to use my cheap heat gun and cheaper steel pipe to apply enough heat and pressure to re-mold stripped out internal threads, and enough raw heat to let another tool's edges cut into material that without that tool, would have required digging lots of dirt for these simple irrigation repair projects!
